Trustees Sandra Faber and Mary-Claire King Receive Distinguished Awards

The American Philosophical Society (APS) awarded Sandra Faber the 2018 Magellanic Premium medal and Mary-Claire King the Benjamin Franklin Medal for Distinguished Achievement in Science.

On April 26, 2019, the American Philosophical Society (APS) awarded former Carnegie fellow and current trustee Sandra Faber the 2018 Magellanic Premium medal. The APS also awarded trustee Mary-Claire King the Benjamin Franklin Medal for Distinguished Achievement in Science.

Faber received the medal “for her contributions to the study of galaxy formation and evolution, which have transformed our understanding of these building blocks of the Universe and set the agenda for years to come…”It is the country’s first scientific prize established in 1700s. King is renowned for her ground-breaking research in identifying the BRCA1 gene, which causes breast and ovarian cancer.
