Dr. Donald Brown was an exceptional scientist who devoted nearly two decades of his career to leading the Department of Embryology at Carnegie. His groundbreaking research in molecular biology revolutionized our understanding of genes and genetic engineering, and his unwavering commitment to mentoring future generations of biologists has had a lasting impact on the scientific community.

As Director, he provided guidance and support to numerous notable biologists, including Nobel laureates Andrew Fire and Tasuku Honjo, as well as National Medal of Science laureate Nina Fedoroff. Dr. Brown's profound influence extended beyond the confines of Carnegie through his founding of the Life Sciences Research Foundation, which assists early-career scientists in their postdoctoral years, nurturing their professional development.

Acknowledged with prestigious awards such as the Lasker-Koshland Special Achievement Award in Medical Science and the Louisa Gross Horwitz Award, Dr. Brown's contributions have garnered recognition from his peers and the scientific community at large.
