This artist's illustration shows a planet (dark silhouette) passing in front of the red dwarf star AU Microscopii. The planet is so close to the eruptive star a ferocious blast of stellar wind and blistering ultraviolet radiation is heating the planet's hydrogen atmosphere, causing it to escape into space. Symbiosis

José Avila Peltroche is a Peruvian phycologist with a strong passion for widening access to scientific knowledge for both scientific and non-scientific communities. He got a Ph.D. in Science by Chosun University (South Korea) in 2021. His investigations involved cryopreservation and protoplast technology from brown algae in order to improve the traditional cultivation methods. His skills include laboratory seaweed in-vitro culture and seaweed identification at morphological and molecular levels. Jose currently holds a six-month seaweed consultant position (September 2022 – February 2023) at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia for lab-scale seaweed cultivation. He is also part of the Sustainable Aquaculture Research Group at Cientifica del Sur University (Peru) and co-founder and administrator of the science popularization initiative “Macroalgas Marinas del Peru.” Jose’s main goal in life is to enhance the social impact of the academy using an interdisciplinary approach and empowering young researchers.
