Kara Brugman is an experimental petrologist who uses extreme temperatures and pressures to study the early years of planets. Here she welds a platinum capsule that will hold the sample (a tiny pocket of magma) for an experiment.

Peng Ni holds a piece of iron meteorite. Many iron meteorites are thought to be remnants of the cores of small planetary bodies in the early Solar System.
