Ethics is defined as moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the conducting of an activity. In this workshop, EPL Director Rick Carlson covered ethics in 3 main areas:
- the workplace
- scientific publication & review
- proposal preparation & review
He discussed:
- Harassment and how to report it
- Scientific misconduct (ensure you keep a lab notebook that keeps track of and documents what you have done)
- Plagiarism
- Authorship (avoid shingling papers, i.e., writing eight separate papers on the same subject)
- Proper attribution (ask a reviewer to be a co-author but do not copy their comments into your paper)
- Conflicts of interest (real or apparent)
- Ethics within the reviewing process
