Yuan Yin joined Carnegie from the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he was a Postdoctoral Associate working on the transport properties of planetary cores. He specialized in multi-anvil experiments and the first-principle calculation method. His research interests are in the evolution of planetary cores, including phase diagrams, element partitioning and thermal evolution. In collaboration with Staff Scientists Dr. Yingwei Fei and Anne Pommier, he is studying the core-mantle differentiation of the Earth and the thermal evolution of the Earth's and Martian cores.
