Department Buildings
This building includes EPL admin and support staff offices, the library, the business office, and the Abelson Collaboration Center (ACC). The microscopy suite is on the basement level. Use the underground tunnel to access the Research Building without getting rained on! You find coffee, a small kitchen with a microwave, office supplies, and a scanner/printer.
It also houses Carnegie's leadership offices including the Office of the President.
Head to Greenewalt for most campus social events and seminars. Inside you'll find the Tuve Dining Hall, a full kitchen, the Greenewalt Auditorium, a ping-pong table, and a spacious outdoor patio. Around the back, you'll find access to the geodynamics laboratory, housed on the basement level of this building.
That's no water tower! This iconic building is the historic home to one of the first Van de Graaff generators to split an atom in the US—known locally as "The Atom Smasher." Now, this building is primarily used for storage.
Learn moreThe largest of our buildings, the Research Building houses the majority of our scientific offices and labs including the high-pressure lab and mass spectroscopy labs. It includes the astronomy library, geophysics conference room, loading dock, machine shop, and mailroom.
This building used to house a cyclotron, which was dismantled in 1994. The cyclotron vault was completely renovated and currently houses our ion microprobe laboratory including the Cameca NanoSIMS 50L ion probe and Cameca IMS-6F ion microprobe. The building also houses our clean wet chemistry labs.

Campus Library
Located in the Abelson building, the Earth & Planets Laboratory Library supports advanced research in the physical, earth, and space sciences and contains the historic archives of more than a century of discovery and innovation on campus.
The library subscribes to more than 200 scientific journals and reference databases and holds 10,000 technical books, maps, and reports.

The Earth & Planets Laboratory maintains a machine shop with state-of-the-art CNC capabilities.
What else is on campus?
BBR is home to more than just the Earth & Planets Laboratory. We share our campus with Carnegie leadership, the Carnegie Academy for Science Education (CASE), and the EPL Library.
The majority of BBR houses the scientific offices, laboratories, and administrative support for the Earth & Planets Laboratory.
The Carnegie Academy for Science Education (CASE) programs have served more than 1,600 students and 1,200 teachers in the nation's capital.
The library of the Earth & Planets Laboratory supports advanced research in the physical and Earth sciences.
President Eric D. Isaacs and his executive leadership team have offices in the Abelson building.
