Amol Karandikar primarily investigates the melting of materials at high pressure, using laser-heated Diamond Anvil Cells (DAC). He has developed a novel 'Flash-heating technique' to accurately measure melting temperatures of metals in diamond cells, that circumvents previous commonplace difficulties in such measurements using Continuous Wave (CW) lasers. He is currently setting up user-friendly laboratories for double-sided laser heating and for Raman spectroscopy in the DAC to study materials at pressures and temperatures relevant to the Earth's interior.

He will be setting up a Laser-Levitation laboratory to synthesize glassy materials of geophysical significance. He is interested in developing techniques to measure thermophysical properties like thermal conductivity, and adiabatic thermal gradients of materials in the Earth's mantle.
