Carnegie president emeritus and current trustee, Dick Meserve received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star Award from the Japanese government October 20th for “his contributions towards strengthening science and technology relations between Japan and the United States of America, as former Chairman of the NRC and as Chairman of the International Nuclear Safety Group (INSAG) of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).” 

The citation noted his significant contributions towards improving Japanese nuclear safety since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident in 2011. The Order of the Rising Sun is a Japanese order established in 1875. It is one of Japan’s highest ranked awards and is bestowed for exemplary services to Japan by citizens or foreigners.
