Washington, D.C.—The Carnegie Academy for Science Education (CASE) was awarded a grant to run two special career exploration programs for students who attend public schools in the District of Columbia. The program is called SciLife™-DC. On Monday, June 17 at 1:00 PM, CASE will host the Stakeholders Planning/Input session at the Carnegie Institution for Science Headquarters, 1530 P Street NW (corner of 16th and P Streets), in the Haskins Board Room. SciLife™-DC is based on the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Science Education (NIH-OSE) program and will follow the JUMP-START Conference Planning Guide recently published by OSE. JUMP-START “helps students learn how to apply to college, sign up for the right college courses, and how to choose from the many career possibilities in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) disciplines.”
SciLife™-DC programs are currently scheduled for the parent-teacher conference days—Monday, October 21, 2013, and Monday, February 24, 2014, when D.C. public school students are not in school. These daylong events will take place at the Carnegie Institution for Science, 1530 P Street, NW, Washington DC 20005.
SciLife™-DC received a community grant from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and is seeking additional support.
The October 21, 2013, SciLife™-DC program will be an opportunity for the area’s high school students to meet more advanced students and young professionals with careers in the bio-medical sciences and related STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). The purpose is to enable the students to learn about career paths and ways to prepare for them through further education, internships, and scholarships.
The February 24, 2014, SciLife™-DC program will be an opportunity for middle school students and their families to learn about bio-medical sciences and related STEM fields and to learn about career paths and ways to prepare, starting with high school courses and internships, continuing on to post-secondary education and scholarships.
